End Citizens United is one of the most significant political action committees that have been organized via a grassroots campaign. It was initially organized in response to the decision made by the Supreme Court less than one decade ago. In the Supreme Court case Citizens United versus the Federal election commission, there was a decision that was made that has enabled the recognition of corporations as having the same rights as individuals. This has allowed the unlimited donation of untraceable and unaccountable funds political campaigns. The end result of this Supreme Court decision has been a substantial increase in the power of big money in politics.
End Citizens United was performed in response to this Supreme Court decision. Their stated mission is the ending of the influence of big money in politics in the Reformation of financial policy in regards to political campaign management. In their first election cycle, they were able to raise $25 million with an average donation of less than $20 per person. This is significant because of all of their donations they have made publicly accessible by having them audited by the Federal elections commission something which has not been done by many large political action committees. They hope to help eliminate the rate of corruption that is present in our current political ecosystem.
End Citizens United has helped to elect several members to our Congress. They have done this through a mechanism of endorsement by selecting candidates who are pushing forward their agenda on campaign finance Reformation. Currently, they have aimed to eliminate senatorial seats from a group of individuals that are referred to as the big money 20. These are 20 individuals who currently hold seat in Congress that are known to have taken money from large donors and corporations. These individuals have a track record of implementing policies that benefit corporations in favor of their constituents. The influence of big money in politics has grown to be ever, and it does not show signs of slowing. With the help of many individuals across the nation, this grassroots campaign has pledged to support the Reformation of campaign finance politics by helping to elect candidates to Congress and political positions of power that are in favor of reforming the mechanisms for political campaign financing. Currently, they have goals of raising an additional $35 million for the 2018 midterm election cycle. They are on track to meet this target and as such have become a force to be reckoned with.
